Why Blue-Eyed Scottish Fold Kittens Are So Rare

One of the most common questions I receive from future kitten owners is:
"Do you ever have blue-eyed Scottish Fold kittens?"
The answer is yes—but they are much rarer than most people realize.
As a Scottish Fold breeder in New York, I've had the privilege of raising some truly special kittens over the years, including blue-eyed and odd-eyed Scottish Folds. These kittens often attract attention immediately because of their striking appearance and unique beauty.
But what makes blue-eyed Scottish Fold kittens so rare?
Are Blue Eyes Common in Scottish Fold Cats?
All kittens are born with blue eyes.
During the first few weeks of life, every kitten's eyes appear blue. As they grow, most kittens gradually develop their permanent eye color, which is usually copper, gold, amber, or green.
True blue eyes that remain into adulthood are much less common.
In Scottish Fold cats, permanent blue eyes are typically associated with specific genetic combinations and coat color patterns.
Why Do Some Scottish Fold Kittens Keep Their Blue Eyes?
Blue eyes are often linked to cats that carry significant white coloring in their coat.
For example, blue eyes may be seen in:
Van-pattern Scottish Folds
Harlequin Scottish Folds
Bicolor Scottish Folds with extensive white
Some colorpoint lines
Not every white kitten will have blue eyes, and not every blue-eyed kitten will remain blue-eyed as an adult.
This is one reason breeders often wait several weeks before making predictions about permanent eye color.
The Difference Between Blue-Eyed and Odd-Eyed Kittens
Some of the rarest kittens are known as odd-eyed cats.
An odd-eyed kitten has one blue eye and one copper, gold, or amber eye.
This condition is called heterochromia and is completely natural.
Many families fall in love with odd-eyed kittens because no two look exactly alike.
Over the years, some of the most memorable kittens born at PrettyFold have been odd-eyed Scottish Folds and Scottish Straights.

Can You Tell Eye Color When Kittens Are Young?
This is one of the questions I answer most often.
The honest answer is: sometimes.
Experienced breeders can often make educated guesses based on genetics, coat pattern, and early eye development.
However, eye color can continue changing for several weeks.
In our cattery, we typically monitor eye color carefully as kittens grow and provide regular updates to families on our waiting list.
Are Blue-Eyed Scottish Fold Kittens More Expensive?

Because blue-eyed Scottish Fold kittens are relatively uncommon, they are often in high demand.
Many families specifically search for:
Blue-eyed Scottish Fold kittens
Odd-eyed Scottish Fold kittens
Rare Scottish Fold colors
White Scottish Fold kittens with blue eyes
Availability depends entirely on genetics and each individual litter.
Some litters may have no blue-eyed kittens at all, while others may surprise us with one or more exceptional kittens.
How Rare Are Blue-Eyed Scottish Fold Kittens?
Compared to traditional copper-eyed Scottish Folds, blue-eyed kittens are considerably less common.
This is especially true when the blue eyes remain vivid and bright into adulthood.
For this reason, many blue-eyed Scottish Fold kittens are reserved quickly, often before they become publicly available.
